Our Native Town -Sevastopol

Sevastopol  is  located on the Black Sea  coast of the Crimea peninsula. It has a population of 342,451  Sevastopol is the second largest port in Ukraine, after the Port of Odessa.

The history of the city is closely connected with the sea.
It was founded in 1783 as a base of Russian fleet on the Crimean seashore to guard the southern boarders of the country.
Our town has a very interesting past. It is the town of two heroic defenses. The word “Sevastopol” means” worthy of glory” in Greek.

During Crimean war   for 349 days people defended Sevastopol and the whole country. The city was besieged by the armies of England, France, Turkey and some other countries. The soldiers and sailors turned   the town into the fortress.
There are many monuments devoted to those hard days: monuments to Russian admirals Nakhimov, Kornilov, Istomin, to sailor Koshka and general Totleben, the Panorama (the Defense of Sevastopol, 1854-1855), monument to Scuttled Ships, Konstantinovskaya Battery, some other monuments on the Northern side of the city, etc.

The second defense of Sevastopol (1941-1942) lasted 250 days and nights. There were many heroes in those days: Ivan Golubets, general Ostryakov, captain Khrustalyov, Nina Onilova and many others whose names are in the names of ships, streets, factories and plants.

Nowadays Sevastopol is one of the biggest and most important industrial and cultural centers on the south of Ukraine. It is the base of Ukrainian Navy and Russian Black Sea Fleet.
